Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Zoysia Grass Seed and Mulch
A seed-and-mulch option for establishing zoysia where the species fits. Choose it for that grass and format, with a realistic maintenance plan; neither the bag nor the sources establish a low-effort route to an instantly dense lawn.
- A good fit for
- A measured zoysia project with full sun or light shade, a warm planting window and reliable watering during establishment.
- The tradeoff
- Seeded zoysia can be difficult and time-consuming to establish. Winter browning and ongoing mowing are part of the species decision, and this bag’s current cultivar analysis is not verified.

A five-pound seed-and-mulch package
The linked Turf Builder Zoysia package contains five pounds of seed and mulch. Scotts lists 665 square feet of new-lawn coverage and 2,000 square feet for overseeding. It is not the seed, fertilizer and soil-improver formula sold under some other Turf Builder grass-seed names.
That distinction matters when comparing products. Five pounds of this combination is not five pounds of plain zoysia seed, and the name alone does not justify adding a fertilizer analysis to the description. Use its own coverage and the current bag’s directions to plan the purchase.
The manufacturer artwork and current product page do not verify the cultivar composition of your retail lot. This review therefore does not call the seed Zenith or assign cultivar percentages. If matching an existing zoysia lawn is important, read its seed-analysis tag before buying. A generic species name cannot establish that two lawns will share exactly the same texture, color or growth habit.[5][6][7][4]
Decide whether zoysia fits the whole year
- Winter appearance
- Zoysia can brown after the first fall frost and remain dormant through winter.[8]
- Establishment
- Seeding zoysia can be difficult and time-consuming; first sprouts are not finished turf.[8]
Read the year-round fit details
Scotts describes full sun to light shade as the intended setting. Clemson’s South Carolina guidance says zoysia can produce dense turf in full sun and partial shade, while heavy shade produces thin turf. Light-shade suitability is not a promise that the grass can fill a deeply shaded yard.
Zoysia is a warm-season grass. Clemson describes active growth in warm weather and browning after the first fall frost, followed by winter dormancy. That seasonal color change is a major buying consideration if you expect the lawn to stay green through cold weather. A seed-and-mulch package does not change the species’ winter behavior.
Clemson also describes slow lateral growth and warns that establishing zoysia from seed can be difficult and time-consuming. Assess the actual site before focusing on the bag’s drought-resistance description: sunlight, planting season, desired winter appearance and your ability to protect a developing lawn all affect the choice.[5][8]
Read the package-based calculation
The matching five-pound bag’s 2,000-square-foot headline is overseeding coverage. For new ground, the stated coverage is 665 square feet. Those are different applications, not interchangeable estimates for the same bare area.
Calculated from the package, a new lawn requires approximately 7.52 pounds of combined product per 1,000 square feet, while overseeding requires 2.5 pounds. A 2,000-square-foot new-lawn project therefore calls for about 15.04 pounds at the stated coverage, compared with five pounds for overseeding. Measure the intended area before deciding how many packages to buy.
These calculations use total seed-and-mulch weight. They should not be substituted for plain-seed rates from another product or an extension publication. Nor should the overseeding number be read as assurance that introducing zoysia into any existing lawn is appropriate. Identify the surrounding grass and the goal of the project before using the lighter rate.[5][6][7]
Warm conditions and shallow coverage matter
Scotts recommends late spring or early summer, with air temperatures between 70°F and 90°F and no danger of frost. Plan around a sustained suitable planting window and the ability to water, rather than one warm day on the calendar.
For new ground, the manufacturer directs you to loosen roughly the top two inches of soil and remove dead grass and debris. After spreading, lightly rake so the seed is just beneath the surface. Two inches refers to soil preparation; it is not a seed burial depth. Overseeding begins with mowing low, collecting clippings and raking to improve contact.
Keep the soil surface moist with daily watering or as needed until seedlings reach two inches. The product’s helpful tips also call for twice-daily watering for at least three weeks. Local evaporation and rainfall affect the practical work, but the purpose remains a moist seedbed. Mature drought tolerance should not be used as a reason to skip this establishment care.[5][6]
Allow time beyond the first green shoots
Scotts gives ten to twenty-one days as a germination estimate. That describes seed beginning to grow, not a dense lawn ready for unrestricted use. Clemson specifically warns that establishing zoysia from seed can be difficult and time-consuming; its separate timeline for plugs should not be presented as a seed timetable.
A mature zoysia lawn also needs maintenance. Clemson’s regional guidance describes weekly mowing during active growth under its management program and discusses reel mowing or a sharp rotary mower at a suitable height. It does not support a blanket claim that this product cuts mowing in half. Adapt established-lawn care to local extension guidance, soil conditions and the actual grass.
For weed control, Scotts says to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least four times. If a herbicide was applied before planting, check that product’s reseeding interval too. The presence of mulch does not remove those restrictions or establish a universal fertilizer requirement; use a soil test and relevant local guidance for feeding decisions.[5][8]
Compare named Bermuda only for a sunny project
Yukon bermudagrass is a meaningful alternative to investigate when the site is fully sunny and recovery during the warm growing season is a priority. Texas A&M describes bermudagrass as having useful wear tolerance and good recovery through rhizomes and stolons, while also warning of poor shade tolerance and frequent mowing.
That makes it a different species choice, not a drop-in substitute for every zoysia setting. Do not choose it as the solution to a shaded patch. Its named cultivar and separate planting instructions also need their own evaluation; neither those details nor general Bermuda traits prove a performance ranking against this unspecified Scotts retail lot.
Keep the comparison focused on what changes the project: sunlight, existing grass, winter dormancy, establishment care and ongoing mowing. If zoysia remains the right choice, this Scotts bag provides a combined seed-and-mulch format with clear task-specific coverage. The current seed tag is still necessary for a precise cultivar match.[5][6][3][1][4][8]
When to choose something else

For a full-sun warm-season project where Bermuda’s recovery traits matter; compare its named cultivar and separate planting directions, while accounting for poor shade tolerance and frequent mowing.
